How did you get your start in your career?

I started in the banking industry working in bank statement processing, but expressed a desire to try new skills by helping with verifying signatures for large checks, data entry or operating the coding machines. I took my first role in the health field in accounts payable and grew from there until I got into Financial Planning and Analysis while completing my undergraduate degree in Accounting and Business Administration and eventually my MBA.

What is one risk that you have taken during your career journey thus far?

Many times I have trusted my gut more than what I see in front of me and it has proven to be invaluable.

What are some factors that you attribute to your success in pharma?

Building strong relationships, staying humble, and being willing to learn have all been factors in my success. I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves and pitch in.

What has been one of the greatest challenges you have faced in your career and how did you overcome that challenge?

Having the confidence to speak up and not be intimidated by a room full of highly knowledgeable people has been a challenge, especially when I’m the only Hispanic in that room. Building resilience as a leader and being comfortable in your own skin is an acquired skill. I got involved volunteering in organizations such as youth sports that would force me to practice these skills in communities where only 5% of the population are Hispanic. It was challenging, but helped me to gain confidence and be a more effective leader.

What is one piece of advice you would give to the next generation of women starting their career in the pharmaceutical industry?

Don’t be afraid to let your voice be heard. Stay true to who you are and embrace your uniqueness and your knowledge.
